Acorus Calamus is a hygrophytic, aromatic plant which loves the swamps. It may be collected from the banks of rivers or streams. The underground stem or rhizome is succulent and yellow on the inside. The leaves are grass- like, about 20 to 60 cms long and lush green in colour. The inflorescence, a curved spadix, is made up of a cluster o tiny flowers borne mid- way up a stalk.
MEDICINAL USE:
* Expelling gases, flatulence and griping pains from the stomach and bowels.
* Promotes menstrual flow.
* Reduces or eliminates fever.
* Calms nervous excitements.
* For causing vomiting.
* Asthma, diarrhoea and chronic dysentery.
* For giving the body tone and vitality.
* Promotes the removal of mucouc secretions from the bronchial tubes.
* Against fungal skin ailments and scabies.
* Relieving rheumatic pains and epilepsy.
* A good mosquito repellant.
HOW TO USE:
* The decoction of the rhizome is used to cause vomiting. It is also used for asthma, diarrhoea and chronic dysentery.
* The infusion of the rhizome can be used for giving the body tone and vitality and for the removal of mucous secretions from the bronchial tubes.
* The powder of the dry rhizome mixed with castor oil is used externally for fungal skin ailments and scabies.
* The crushed rhizome is applied on the area affected by rheumatism.
* The powdered rhizome mixed with honey is taken internally for epilepsy.

The underground stem or rhizome.
DOSE:
For decoction, use 1 tsp of dry rhizome in 1 cup of water. Use 1 cup a day. For infusion, use 2 teaspoons of the rhizome in 1/2 cup of water. Use 1 cup a day.
Decoction- Here the hard parts of the plants, such as twigs, roots, barks, rhizomes, berries and some seeds are gently simmered for about 30 minutes in water so as to release their properties. Strain before grams.
Hot Infusion- Pour boiling water over the collected herb, steep for 15 minutes and strain. This method is used for flowers and leaves to make a tea for use right away. It could also be used for powdered bark, roots, seeds, or resins and also for bruised nuts, seeds, bark, o buds.
Cold Infusion- Steep in cold water for several hours, strain, and use.
