 The Umbrella Shrub is a smooth and hairless plant belonging to the family Araliaceae. The tree grows to a height of about 6 metres. The leaflets are normally 5-7 in number and they are shorter than the petioles. The leaflets are smooth, broaldy ovate, shiny and acute. The flowers are greenish and the fruit is fleshy, globose or round when fresh and six- angled when dry.

MEDICINAL USE:

* Coughs and colds.
* Healing sores, wounds and cuts.
* Scurvy.

HOW TO USE:

* The bark is used in decoction for coughs and colds.
* The resin of the plant is used as a poultice for healing sores, wounds and cuts.
* The leaves, in decoction, are effective in the prevention or relief of scurvy.



PARTS USED:

The bark and leaves.

DOSE:

Normal Dosage For:

Adults: 4 or 5 cups a day.
Aged 6 to 9 years: 2 cups a day
Aged 2 to 5 years: 1 cup a day
1 to 2 years: 1/2 cup a day
Below 1 year: 1/4 or less cup a day

A Useful Table for Quick Measurements:
1 tbsp = 5 grams (green herb)
1 dessertspoon = 2 grams (dry herb)
1 teaspoon = 25 drops
1 cup = 16 tbsp


1 litre = 7 or 8 cups
