Tanner's Cassia

Tanner's Cassia is a 3-5 feet tall much-branched, hairy shrub with a reddish brown smooth bark. It belongs to the plant family Caesalpiniaceae. The leaves are 7.5-10 cm. long with a gland between each pair of leaflets. The 8-12 pairs of leaflets are 2-2.5 cm. long and slightly overlapping. They are oblong-obovate, and obtuse with numerous hair. The flowers are large, reaching 5 cm. across in terminal and axillary racemes. The pods are 7.5-12.5 cm. long, flat, thin, oblong, obtuse, and deeply depressed between the 10-20 seeds. Researcher tell us that the extracts from the flowers of this shrub posses antihyperlipidaemic and antidiabetic activities.
MEDICINAL USE:
*Diabetes, giddiness, weakness and insomnia.
*Oedema in hands and legs.
*Blood pressure and constipation.
*Menorrhagia or excessive bleeding during menstruation.
*Improvement of the complexion.
*Burning sensation during urination and leucorrhoea.
*Eye diseases.
HOW TO USE:
*To take care of the first set of ailments under Medicinal use, make a decoction from the dry roots,
bark, flowers, leaves and fruits. Take 1 teaspoon of this mixture with some hot water, two or three
times a day for 2 to 3 months continuously.
*For oedema in hands and legs, take 1 tablespoon each of Tanner's Cassia bark and dried ginger and
boil well in one cup of water till the volume is reduced to two tablespoon. Filter and drink.
*To take care of the third set of ailments under Medicinal use, powder dry seeds and store. Before
going to sleep every night, soak half of cup of Black Gram and a slice of fig in two glasses of water.
The next morning, boil them till the volume of water is reduced to half. Strain and remove the
solids. Then add half teaspoon powdered seeds of Tanner's Cassia to the filtrate and drink. Use for
2-3 months continuously.
*To relieve menorrhagia, placed some cleaned flowers into the vaginal canal for 10-15 minutes.
Repeat frequently. Soak two tablespoons of fresh flowers in water in a few hours and drink. This
improves the complexion.
*To ease burning during urination, mix half a teaspoon of the gum of this shrub in one cup water and
drink twice a day for several days.
*In cases eye disease, fry some leaves in a little clarified butter or ghee. Cool and place them on the
closed eyelids. Tie a bandage over it and rest for ten minutes.
PARTS USED:
*Bark, gum, flowers, fruits, leaves and roots.
DOSE:
As recommended above.
Normal Dosage For:
Adults: 4 or 5 cups a day.
Aged 6 to 9 years: 2 cups a day
Aged 2 to 5 years: 1 cup a day
1 to 2 years: 1/2 cup a day
Below 1 year: 1/4 or less cup a day

1 tbsp = 5 grams (green herb)
1 dessertspoon = 2 grams (dry herb)
1 teaspoon = 25 drops
1 cup = 16 tbsp
1 litre = 7 or 8 cups
